  • How to make the most out of your new Spring jacket How to make the most out of your new Spring jacket

0 comments / Posted on by Dom Girard

The arrival of Spring is often a euphoric moment; the mercury rises, the sun shines as never before and the sidewalks are finally clean! We want to make the most of every moment, but finding the right jacket to wear can be a nightmare! Because yes it's exciting when things warm up... but there is a long "in between" moment where it's too hot for your winter jacket, but too cold for your favorite jean vest. So I thought I'd make a spring version of my blog One dress, two ways and present you two jackets with two ways to wear them  :)

For the first coat I chose the Arabella from Soïa & Kyo. It's a nylon coat with a large hood and a (removable) belt. It's not lined, but with a good fleece vest underneath, it's possible to wear it when it's cooler (and by cooler, I still mean above zero!) Also, the belt helps to prevent the wind entering from underneath.

    Beanie : Caddie by Soïa&Kyo - Scarf : Miri by Soïa&Kyo - Bag : Palmview by Rudsak

The first outfit is for colder weather. I chose accessories of lighter color cause, yay, it's spring! we want light!! If it's not yet warm enough, you could even opt for a fur jacket to put on top, like the Rudsak Malverne. It's fashionable and oh so cosy!

    Scarf : Daisie by Soïa&Kyo - Bag : Minka by Matt&Nat

The second look with the Arabella is much lighter. The coat can easily be worn open, either without the belt or tied in the back. It really is an everyday look, super easy to wear for work, school or heading to the grocery store! I love the touch of color that the Matt & Nat handbag adds! I could've opted for the powder blue bag or the mint one... all fun choices that add a little punch to your look!

The second coat I chose is a Point Zero reversible jacket (yes, loving the reversible !!). That's what attracted me to it. To have a springy floral jacket, but to also have a more classic option in the same jacket ... I love it!

    Jacket : 8818505 by Point Zero - Scarf : luw0448 by LOLË Bag : Baxter by Matt&Nat

Again, the first outfit is more cosy and warm, with the massive Lolë infinity scarf; truly the most comfortable scarf! (I could also have completed the look with assorted mittens and beanie). I opted for a big tote bag, perfect for slipping your mittens into when the day gets warmer ;)

Same coat, but as if by magic, we change it up. We end up with a super summer jacket with pretty flowers (not too flashy). I have arranged it with one of my favorites this season, Matt & Nat's small Koala Mumbai backpack, and some light and sparkly jewels to put a spring into your step :)

I'm totally a fan of multifunctional /multiseason items. Not only will you get a lot of value out of an item, but you've got less chance of getting bored of it!

And over to you, what is your favorite spring basic?

How to chose the perfect handbag for you

Shown here with the new Matt&Nat winter collection

There's a lot of clichés out there about a woman and her handbag. Even if they might not all be true (at least not for all women), the handbag is still THE No.1 accessory for women. It's not surprising that the range is so large and so diverse. The thing is, with so much choice it's difficult to chose at all! Even with restrictions like "I want pink!" The choice is enough to make you dizzy. It's easier when the choice is aesthetic, you know when you have a party and want a bag to go with your new glittering dress (that you probably won't wear ever again - neither the bag nor the dress). But when you want a bag for every day, to go with all your moods, all your clothes and all temperatures ... It's a little less obvious! Of course we all have different tastes, but I'm going to sum up the essentials (or at least the most handy) things to consider when buying a new handbag.

    Shape / Size

From left to right : Scarlett , Hamel and Luna

From the large tote to the small evening bag, handbag sizes are infinite. When I shop for a new bag, I make sure to take the things I will always have in my bag - glasses case, wallet, key, make-up, computer, etc. This way, I can immediately try to fit my things in to make sure that the size of the bag is right for my needs and avoid being disappointed when I get home!

    Care

If you are on the lazy side or just really busy, I advise avoiding materials that require maintenance, such as leather. A genuine leather bag needs to be creamed and protected against exposure to water and sunlight. It's simple and quick maintenance, but it's very important not to forget to do so. Otherwise, your leather may crack or discolor quickly and that's really not what we want !! This is why I have a soft spot for Matt & Nat bags; they are made of vegan leather and require no maintenance.

    Inside (pockets, etc)

While some of us are tote bags lovers and love to simply "throw" stuff in their bags, anywhere as long as it is in the bag, some others (and yes that's me), want a little more organization. Oh the joys of having a bag with plenty of inside pockets! A place for your computer, one for your mobile, one for your keys ... some bags even have a built beauty kit! Woowwww .... For example, I love the bag illustrated above, with two zipped pockets plus a third one with a press stud and that has another small pocket for your cell phone. An organized person's dream !!

    Straps

    In the picture : Portia

Another important factor to consider when you are choosing a new handbag, are the straps! Personally, my handbag should absolutely be wearable on my shoulder. If there is not strap long enough to make it happen, it's not the bag for me! More often than not, bags come with an integrated short strap and a longer one that can be added. That's ideal! Otherwise, a few bags also allow the option of wearing it as a backpack, which can also be a big plus!

    Color

    Minka

Finally, the last criteria is purely aesthetic and yes I'm talking about color! From black to white or fuchsia pink to mint green, the choices are endless. If you want an every day bag and want to enjoy it as long as possible, I advise you to choose a neutral color; a canary yellow, for example, does not necessarily go with all your clothes and won't perhaps, be as adequate in winter. Without necessarily going for the black or gray, some colors are more sober and age better for example, khaki, burgundy and navy.

There you go! It's all in the bag ;)

    Happy shopping!

  • One dress, two ways One dress, two ways

We all have a staple item in our wardrobe that we never get tired of. Whether it's a shirt or a dress, you'd love to wear it every day, for any occasions. and why not? Anything is possible with a little imagination and accessories! I created for you two completely different looks, using a super simple black dress as the base. The formula works as well with a pair of pants and a plain top (preferably a neutral color to allow for more possibilities).

    Day look / Casual

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of a day look, is comfortable and convenient. Whether its to spend the afternoon at the park with your friends or go shopping downtown, you want to have everything you need and not regret your choice. That's why I chose the classic jean jacket because it has a very summery look, the resealable chest pockets are ideal for your keys or your money and if it gets too hot, you can wear it around your waist.

I could've opted for a backpack as well, but when it's hot, we don't want to have something stuck to our backs. Hence why I chose the Rudsak bag Maddy in Small or Medium - simple (but effective) black bag. It's just big enough to hold all your essentials (wallet, glasses, sunscreen, etc.), but small enough to not get in your way. Complete the look with a flat sandal for maximum comfort, especially for those spontaneous long summer strolls! The scarf adds a touch of color to the outfit and can also be worn in the hair to protect your head from the sun (or just add as touch of glamour)!

    Night look / chic

With a simple base like a little black dress, it's easy to create a chic look. Switch up the jean jacket with a fitted blazer or a shawl as in the example above. A light shawl like this is practical as you can easily put it in your bag if it gets too hot. You can also play with your imagination as to how to wear it! Exchange the colored scarf for the necklace of your choice. As the dress has no pattern, you can afford a longer or even a statement necklace (click here for tips on how to wear the statement necklace !!).

You can easily keep the same handbag for the day to night look as it's super simple and works great with the two looks. Complete the ensemble with a fancier sandal, whether it's heels, platform or flat, the important thing is that you are comfortable and ready to party! Laced or gladiator style sandals would be a perfect match!

As I said earlier, the key is in the accessories. The same dress, with a cork sandal or with a leather sandal ... completely different look! The possibilities are endless! Hopefully I've given you an excuse to wear your favorite item even more * winkwink *

Statement necklaces and why I love them

Statement necklaces are nothing new. You can find them almost anywhere, and their popularity is on the rise... and I couldn't be happier! A great way to show your edgy personality while remaining classy. I'm not the kind of girl who wears lots of patterns... In fact, my wardrobe is almost exclusively composed of black. I love layering, mixing textures, but sometimes it lacks a bit of character... a punch. The statement necklace is my accessory of choice for these moments; it adds a little wow to your look. And if you're lacking inspiration for your outfit, no worries! Everyone's eyes will be drawn to the piece of art on your neck! That being said, let me share with you my three favorite styles as well as some tips to match them to your outfit.

My first category is necklaces that I like to call- Aztec inspiration, with silver chain(s) and turquoise stones. If you browse regularly on Pinterest or Polyvore, you've probably seen several ensembles featuring them, especially since last year where they have taken off in popularity. One way I love wearing statement necklaces and especially these are over a fully buttoned blouse. This is the style that I propose in the above pictures. Love this look... it rocks!

No need to have a special outing to wear a statement necklace. Here's my favorite casual look, for a quick run to the grocery store or a barbecue with your best buddy. It revisits the combo jeans / t-shirt by adding a touch of eccentricity/originality. If you're good with your hands, you can even let your creativity go wild and make your own necklace, like me in the picture on the right! Head to your favorite craft store and get a little crazy! Some felt, a needle and thread, a chain ... and a splash of imagination!

Finally, the last style that I propose is a little more dressed up. I love the simplicity of the right collar mixed with the originality of the layout of the two colors. You can also play it up with a necklace like the one on the left, with multiple levels and different types of pearls. With such a big style, if you have very long hair I recommend adopting an upstyle so your hair doesn't take away from the necklace. I also would opt for stud earrings rather than pendents. All eyes will be on you!

I I don't think there is any occasion where I wouldn't wear a statement necklace! They are my go-to to complete my outfits. They add originality and dynamism to your look... without effort. There are so many choices on the market that there is no doubt you will find the style that best suits your tastes and your personality! The last tip I can give you is ... Don't be afraid, Dare to stand out!!

  • Summer and its array of colours! Summer and its array of colours!

0 comments / Posted on by Dom Girard

Ahhh summer, heat, pools, sun dresses ... but above all, the beautiful colors! I get so excited when the time comes to put away all my thick and heavy clothes and switch to my summer wardrobe. It's not just the clothes that change with the seasons, but also the hairstyles, makeup trends and the (insert drum roll please)... nail polish !! Matte, glossy, discreet, funky ... so many possibilities! Let me show you 3 of the Essie new summer 2016 colours paired with my 3 favorite dresses so far this season! Woohoo!

Colour : Essie – High Class Affair

Whether it’s a more of a brownish pink or the brightest you can find, it will fit easily with this dress Love Land, from a brand that I looove, Cokluch. If you haven't heard of them, get this, not only are their products beautiful, but they are also manufactured in Quebec. And that we like... alot!!! Love Land is delicate and light, ideal for hot summer days.

Colour : Essie – Pool side service

This year again, we are pleased to welcome back Pink Martini, a guest brand from Toronto that offers a range of products - all oh so alluring and Vintage inspired. I particularly like the one shown above, Take flight, with its flying bird print and its large white and turquoise stripes. The cut is simple; a round neck, wide straps and stitching to emphasize the waist. Simple but effective. What I particularly like about this dress is the texture of the fabric; without being too intense, it adds the perfect detail to complete this gem of a dress! In addition, it fits perfectly with any shade of turquoise polish. How lovely!

Colour : Essie – Lounge lover

Last stop ... pink pink pink! Year after year, pink remains a main attraction in summer fashion, whether it’s pastel, flowers or more orange-y or coral (as in the case of this dress) . The accents of color in this Schwiing dress (model Myrka) are discrete and that's what I love about this piece. Because sometimes just a little, is just enough! This style is also offered with a turquoise accent or simply white, but not having a lot of pink in my wardrobe, I have a crush on this one. Pair it with your favorite pink nail polish and off you go!

So there you have it,  three of my favorite dresses paired with three shades of the new Essie - summer 2016 collection. We talk about color matching... but you know, in the end, there's no law! Except maybe ... if you like it, wear it!
